Second Hand Coffee Tables
From suburban mansions to studio apartments, town houses to country cottages, living rooms everywhere prominently feature the must-have piece of furniture: the coffee table. Coffee tables are not only functional, but they are one of most important accents to the overall design of the room.
The coffee table is the focal point of a living room around which other furniture is arranged, so finding one that is stylish without overwhelming the room is vital to creating a sense of harmony. The three most important things to keep in mind when buying your second hand coffee table are function, size and style. Read More ▼
Function
The way you use plan to use your table will greatly impact your decision. Do you plan to use it as a canvas to display vases or other objects? If you plan on using the table to hold the weight of heavy or valuable objects, you’ll want to make sure it’s made from rock-solid materials. If you plan on using the table for dining, the finish should be easy to clean. Glass tops or laminates are ideal for this, while uneven, unsealed wood surfaces will be out of the question. If you’re low on space, you might also want to use the table as an extra storage unit, so look for tables that have drawers or shelves under the top.
Size
The size and scale of your coffee table needs to be carefully considered so that it fits in well with the size of the living room and other furniture. Generally, a rectangular table should be about half to one-third the length of your sofa, and should be even with the top seat cushions of the surrounding chairs and couches. You’ll want to consider the traffic of your living room as well – your family and guests should be able to manoeuvre around the room with ease.
Style
Oval, rectangular, circular… there is a great range of sizes as well as materials and finishes to choose from when buying a coffee table. However, keep in mind the fact that you’re buying a piece to go in an existing room. Look at the other objects and furniture in the room for design ideas and inspiration. If you have a very minimalist, clean look in the room, you won’t want a big, ornately carved coffee table. Take pictures of your living room and then flip through magazines and online stores to help you visualise the final outcome.
