Picking the Right Desk for your Child
Having a desk that your child enjoys sitting at is incredibly important and of course very necessary. Their desk needs to be a place where they are comfortable. It needs to see them through hours of homework and school projects. As we know how special your child is, we're confident you'll take a bit of care and thought when shopping around for a desk for your child. Here are a few helpful things to keep in mind before you make this big purchase. Read More ▼
Function
It’s important to think about what your child will be using the desk for. If your child is very young, do you plan on having it for the next ten years? While your child may only use it as an area to draw on and read at now, you might want to add a computer later so you’ll want to make sure the desk is set up to handle the weight and has space for a keyboard, monitor and mouse. Also, it may be fun to buy a themed desk for your child, but chances are they will outgrow it in a few years time, making it necessary to go through this process again. The desk will likely be used for both play and school work, so choose one that has drawers and plenty of space for storing pencils, papers and other school supplies.
Size
Just as important as the function of the desk is its size. You’ll first need to decide where you plan on placing the desk for your child. Most times parents put the desk in their child’s room where there isn’t much space to work with. Be sure to take all the measurements of the area including height, width and length before you start shopping. You will also need to consider the child’s size. If you plan on having the desk for a while, make sure your child will be able to grow into it comfortably.
Material
The material and durability are very important features to consider when shopping around. The desk needs to be sturdy, safe and able to withstand any rough play. You never know what your child might end up using the desk as – whether to climb on, create a fort or use as a chair, so it needs to be very solid. If it looks rickety or wobbles, there’s a good chance it could break and cause injuries to your child or damage to a computer that might sit atop it.
After taking the function, size and material of the desk into consideration, remember to let your child help pick out their favourite desk. This needs to be an area they enjoy sitting at and are comfortable in, so make sure they’re a part of the final decision.
